When Hurricane Dorian hit The Bahamas as a strong category 5 hurricane in 2019, residents, home owners and faithful visitors could not have imagined the scale of recovery that would ensue.
Critical supplies of food and building materials were needed in desperate, short order. Funds were immediately raised. NGOs quickly came to the rescue for many. But there were organizations that did not have mechanisms in place at the time to receive funding and these small organizations were not able to garner much help.
Such was the case of the Elbow Reef Lighthouse Society among others. Although there were many who wanted to help with donations they were distrustful of sending funds through channels they were unfamiliar with.
The Elbow Reef Foundation was founded based on this reaction to the crisis and as a way forward for the future needs of the preservationist community of Elbow Cay.
